Making memories, for better or for worse!

Picture this: Happy children, skipping alongside the Reflecting Pool on our way to the Lincoln Memorial as their mothers catch up on the last five years.

Yeah... Not so much.

Reality:
It started off great. Boo was a champ on the early-morning drive to DC. Yesterday we just spent time with each of my friends who live here. Tourist traps were reserved for today with one of my oldest friends, Saundra, and her daughter, Melody. To prepare, we got plenty of sleep and Boo ate a good-sized breakfast.

We arrive to Saundra's house and set off for the Metro. Everything smooth so far.

Once we got to the National Mall area (where all the big attractions are located), so began the saga of Boo and Mels feeding off each other's crying the. Entire. Time. First it's too hot, then feet hurt, then this, then that. Ohmygawd the whining.

This is as close as I got to the Lincoln Memorial.

Much of this is my fault. Boo's tennis shoes fit lengthwise but apparently aren't fitting in width, which l learned when I took her shoes off and saw blisters about to form. Poor thing's feet really did hurt. I didn't believe her because we hadn't even walked a mile before she started complaining. It was like 95° out so I just figured she was being whiny because she was hot. Mom fail.

So the shoes came off.

Just a Boo, a really far away White House, and her Doc McStuffins socks.

I still got to hang and chat with Saundra.

We did visit the Korean War Memorial and the WWII Memorial:

We ended at the Museum of American History, where I spent $30 on some pizza and Popsicles and air conditioning. Worth it. Boo started to complain that she was now cold and I almost lost it.

She's lucky she's cute. The only thing I saw in the museum other than the cafeteria.

Refreshed, we decided to end on a high note and took a taxi back to the Metro parking lot to avoid further meltdowns.

Tomorrow will be spent at the pool with Saundra and her children after Boo and I hit Arlington National Cemetery and Union Station (in different shoes). On our last day, I'm thinking Gettysburg, but maybe not. No need to push things. I want to see the museums with John anyway.

I'm learning. And hey, it was certainly a memorable day.

My current view:

Side note: My New Balance flats are winners! They were very comfortable and withstood over 6 miles of walking today. For $59, I'm pretty happy.
